on the set of the western film the sunset of levi owens, robotics engineer martha redwill and director peter macintosh unveil an android modeled after the late movie star burt malloy. programmed with both burt’s archived personality and the consciousness of levi owens, the fictional hero burt was famous for playing, the android is designed to become a new kind of movie star.
when he is accidentally left powered on between takes, the two identities begin to blur. after escaping the set with tess, the actress playing levi’s lover, he sets out for burt’s former home in search of answers. confronted with the lives and expectations that have been programmed into him, he must decide whether he is burt, levi, or someone entirely his own.
