summary of 2023

i wasn’t expecting to need to summarize 2023, but time gets away.

in january-may of 2023, i finished up my second semester at nyu’s graduate musical theatre writing program. in this semester i composed music for a nine-minute dance piece created in collaboration with the undergraduate dance performance and graduate design students at nyu. i wrote a seven minute aria that was workshopped with a professional opera singer and music director. i wrote plenty of other songs as well, but the first year culminated in a twenty-minute musical called fOlkTail written with sravya saraswatula.

in the summer i stayed in the city and started working on my thesis musical with hannah z. morley. i also worked at nyu and helped the renovation of the department facilities. i also started working on a twenty-minute musical with the across a crowded room program through the nypl.

in august-december i started my last year at nyu. hannah and i started further developing our full-length thesis show, monster, loosely based off mary shelley’s frankenstein.i finished and presented ‘swamp show’ at the lincoln center library for the performing arts through across a crowded room in november. then i found out that i was a region 1 finalist and national semi-finalist for the john cauble award for outstanding short play through the kennedy center american college theatre festival, which will receive a concert reading in early february at central connecticut state university. then i ended the semester with a 45-minute presentation of material from our thesis show.

overall 2023 was a year filled with ups and downs, but i am only looking forward to 2024!
